ACROSS THE HARBOUR

EASTBOURNE AEFAIRS PROGRESSIVE BRANCH POLICI’ IN OPERATION. LAST NIGHT’S MEETING. Presided over by the Mayor (Mr P. H. Mather) the Eastbourne Borough Council met last evening. Present were Messrs C. Hartridge, H. W. Shortt, C. Bowden, H. J. Levy, H. M. Jones, C. A. Marquis, and E. A. Dawson. EROSION COMPLAINED OF. Mr W. T. Brunton wrote complaining of the erosion which was taking place on the foreshore near his property. He asked for steps to be taken to. prevent any further erosion.—The letter was received. Mr A. Hammond complained of the storm water which was allowed to accumulate upon his section in Matapo street. “This opens up a big question,” said the Mayor, on whose motion the matter was deferred. In reply to the counciTs application for equipment from the railway fire brigade, the General Manager of Railways wrote to the effect that the suburban body, was under a misapprehension. The brigade was not disbanding, the Dunedin body only, being broken up. RADIUM APPEAL. “It is deserving of every possible support that we can render,” said the Mayor, when an appeal from the Wellington Radium Fund was received, “but, unfortunately, there are a number of appeals in the borough just now.” He left the matter of whether or not a public meeting should be held to the council, and it was resolved unanimously to hold it. Mrs P. Jackson wrote requesting a : remission of rates upon some empty houses, but the council decided to reply as to its inability to do this. The Presbyterian Church property committee wrote requesting a remission of rates upon the church site.—lt was resolved to advise them to make application to the proper quarter, the Valuation Department. STREET WORKS. The general manager’s report stated that the widening and grading of the roadway in Marine parade, south of Burch’s comer, had been completed. A facine had been erected at the end of Rata street, and had proved effective in preventing sand drift. Much sand had been blown about during the month at the north end of the parade, and had cost considerable labour to clear. It was proposed to erect facine and plant it with znaram grass at the earliest opportunity. Mi* J. E. Fulton advised the construction of a new straight-line culvert from Marama terrace to the Rona street stream, which was to be the property of the council. Provision for the work would be made upon next year’s estimates. In the meantime, temporary repair with timber would be carried out. Streets and channels had been cleared up every Saturday. Notice had been served on two owners to make repairs and alterations. It was proposed to hold the dlean-up campaign in the second week of December. Street lighting had commenced on October 29th, last. RECREATION GROUND. A new cricket pitch had been finished on the recreation ground, topdressed and. sown. The whole area was 6adly in need of water. A well had been sunk in Muritai Park, an excellent supply of water being found at a depth of 12ft. If a windmill were erected, with the construction of storage tanks at 30ft, sufficient pressure would be obtained for supply to the pavilion and irrigation of the playing area. During the coming month it was proposed to repair the culvert in Rona street, erect a shed for hot water arrangements for picnic patiee at the recreation ground, construct an approach to the ladies’ bathing shelter, to erect a facine and form a footpath at the north endi of Marine parade, and, if possible, commence a footpath in Nikau street.
