LIFEBELTS USELESS FIREMAN CONTRADICTS EVIDENCE OF CAPTAIN. “BELTS BURST QPEN.” By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received November 23, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, November 22. Charles Bainbridge, a fireman who joined the Trevessa in South Australia, gave evidence at the inquiry that the ship’s lifebelts were practically rotten, and ought to have been condemned. When the belts got wet the cork expanded, and the belts hurst open, and they threw them overboard. • He believed they had not a belt left when they reached Mauritius. If the captain said that only good strong lifebelts were given out, witness would have to contradict the statement. Witness said there was great difficulty in getting the coloured men into the boats. One of the coloured men murderously assaulted him in the stokehold between Fremantle and DurWitness did not desire to complain against, any of the officers or men. He had never in his life served under such a gallant captain.
