Dr. Schmalzried, captured by brigands on November 13th at Kweichow, on the Hunan border, belonged to Tungjen. , The American Charge d’Affaires has addressed a Note to Waichiaop protesting against the failure’.of the authorities to protect missionaries in the interior, and asking the Government to communicate -with provincial authorities. and requesting that every possible measure be taken to secure Dr. Sc-hmalzried’s release, and also to protect other missionaries in Tungjen.
