Mr Fillmore, once vice-president of the United States, was a teetotaller, and gave his guests nothing spirituous or fermented. While soda water, lemonade, "et id genus omne,” popped and fizzed on every side, the guests, with an assumed hilarity, discussed the pros and cons of total abstinence. Presently a moroselooking man, who had watched his opportunity, took advantage of a pause in the conversation and, with a nasal twang, said: "I tell you what it is.
