In every State of tho Commonwealth the number of applicants for the maternity allowance is diminishing (says the Melbourne “Age”). Taken m conjunction with the fact that 99 per oent. of eligible women claim the allowance, the circumstance would indicate ■ a steady shrinkage of the birth-rate. In two years the number of claimants during the four months, Jiily-October, has been reduced _by nearly 1000. ■ In 1921, over thia four months’ period, 46,201 claims were granted; in 1922, the number increased to 46,478, but in 1923 it fell away to 45,266.
