CUP (By "Carbine.”) Pilliewinkie is now tho absolute favourite for tho New Zealand Cup. Following on his £,ood showings at Trentham ne has j-aiioped well at Riccarton

this week. Some express the opinion th.at ho will not see out the two miles, bu’t those who know him said before the Wellington meeting that he was a great galloper and that he was always running on at the finish of his races. Certainly, Wellington ruuning supports their contention. He was very unlucky to bo boaten by Mark Timo and Surveyor, both of whom he flew post, a few yards after the Judge bad been reached. Roseday still holds a strong place in pnblio favour, and so does Muraahi. In tho south there is a move in favour of Palestrina. THE STEWARDS’ The .Stewards* Handicap has backers Euzzled. ■ In Wellington Rational and ,a<!y Fingers are the favourites, but in the -south tho first choice is Glentruin, end, as she has galloped well of late, Chat choice docs not seem by any measure a bad one. Rational and Lady Fingers both have big followings in Cliristoh’uroh. AVith -regard to Lady Fingers if should be kept in mind that with more luck in the running Tukia might have beaten ter. Another who might go well and might upset a big bog is Lowesign. J THE TROTTING CUP . Acron and Great Hope are the favourites for the New Zealand Trotting Cup, but both are closely run in public estimation by Snow Shoo, who, to say the least, appears to have as good a chance as either of them. Great Hope is not the only representative of hla stablo in, the race, and this may not be against him. NOTES AND COMMENTS C. Emerson is one of the riders without a mount in the Stewards* Handicap. It was generally understood that be would ride Glentruin, on whom he won last year, and Emerson himself shared | that view, hut something appears to have i gono wrong. M. McCarten is now men- ! tioned as likely : to pilot Glentruin. i It is understood that L. G. Morris | will ride Muraahi in the New Zealand ! Cup j O. Young will have the mount on ! Palestrina in the New Zealand Cup. 1 If Gay Juliet starts in the Oaks next | week she will be ridden by M. McCar- | tea. j Palestrina has got through a lot of solid work this season, and she looks a I fit mare. Unfortunately, she has been suffering from greasy heels for some time, and ‘ hey are still troubling her. Enure lam© after working on Saturday, but he made a quick recovery, as lie appeared to be all right again yest6iday morning. . Deucalion can be regarded as a certain starter tor the New Zealand Cup, in which he will be ridden by F. J 3. Jones Ballymena was given steady work at Riccarton on Tuesday. The Derby candidate still shows signs of soreness, but h© is no worse than on Saturday. Kukume was a trifle sere after working on Tuesday, but she gradually walked the trouble off and she was all right when she left the course.

The three-year-old MurMinupo look© well after his Australian Irip, and though he has plenty of weight, he is expected to race prominently in the Bte\vards* Handicap It is probable that he will be ridden by A. Oliver. Tukia looks in the oink of condition. P-h© was .one of the best of last season's two-year-olds, and on her running at Tientham, where she was second to Ladyfingers in the Shorts Handicap, after getting off slowly, she will take some beating in the Stewards* Handicap.

Startle, a double winner at the Poverty Eay meeting last week, is a threc-year-old filly by Flying Start, by San Francisco from Fleetfoot, by, Olanranald from Safeguard. Flying Start was a good looking horse i.nd. a fine galloper, and his daughter has the reputation of 'having inherited his speed.

Koodoo, who showed some form at the Poverty Bay Turf Club's meeting last week, is a five-year-old brother to Eleus, by Elysian—Kowerewere. He won three races out of four starts late last season, and ha shapes like making a useful sore

Lochson, Sir Fanciful and Sir Rosebery, who won the 'hurdles races at Trentham, are booked to compete at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, and they look like getting some of tie money during the Riccarton carnival. C. Brown, Who will be riding for T. Quinlive.n's stable at Riccarton, arrived in Wellington yesterday arid went south last night. At the bloodstock sales at Deauville (France) a yearling colt by Somme Kissi from Titceila. realised 250,000 francs. At pre-war rates that .Mould havo been <£l0 f--000, but at present rates of exchange it is less than . .£3500.

TJp to the beginning of September Parkinoon, iho well-known Irish trainer, had H- winning horses, the total wins credited them being 103, which beats by one the Irish record put up by Parkinson's own stable in 1015. With the assistance of chother couple of months, Parkinson should at least get close to 120 wins. Although there are some rich races in Ireland, stakes, as a wfiiole, are on a rather low scale, and) the stable's 103 M ins only carried .£9943. The most successful jockey up to September was E. M. Quirke, with €5 wins.

TRACK NOTES TRAINING AT RICCARTON. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Times.") CHRISTCHURCH, October 31. With the approach of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting interest in the training work at Riccarton grows keener every clay. Tne conditions were wild this' morning, -when all the horses were out at exercise, but there was no excitement about the proceedings, easy tasks being tho rule. The only gallop of note was done by Royal Star, Tor whom permission was obtained to be on the outside of the course proper. He broke away at the mile and h quarter mark, but weit slowly over the first furlong, from which point he ran home in 2min. Jazz joined in for the last seven fur- i longs, but Royal Star shook him off at the finish. The first half mile occupied 55sec, and the last half mile 52sec. It was a good gallop. Pilliewinkie ian a mile oq' the trial

grass track, coming home from the half mile post in 55sec- He gained many admirers by his mile and a quarter the previous day. j The other horses worked on the plough i and Kilgour -worked -with sweaters on for tho second time since his arrival here, j Palestrina was given a oouple of steady ; rounds. She has lost her usual placid ; appearance an t she sweated freely after her gallop the previous day, -when, she beat Muraahi. Admirers of the latter have not lost faith through this defeat, they claim that ho is a bad track horse and that he is one of the few real stayers in the Cop field. Scotch Mixture, following on a good mile yesterday, brushed home at the end of a steady round. He is being freely discussed in Cup connection. To-day Scion and Quest, who arrived vosterday, -were given steady pacing. Scion was hit on the head with a orate on the trip to Lyttelton, and he bled alter -working this morning. Vagabond, Little River and Kilbird, three other late arrivals, were set modest tasks. They look bright and well. Rational trotted) and cantered on the lead. Limelight, who is recovering from an attack of kidney trouble, went nicely in slow work. Dazzle and Gold Light rattled down the straight at the end of a round. Tukia moved along at a sound pace over a few furlongs. Ballymena, who has been sore since his return from Sydney, appears to be getting over the trouble, and be went quite freely. To-day’s arrivals from Wellington are Rouex, Sir Fanciful, Lochson and Kalakaua. To-night's train from Dunedin is expected to bring Roseday. There are not so. many North Island horses in evidence for the meeting. As usual, the outside of the course proper will he open for fast work to-mor-row morning, when the r TOCee dings should be interesting. Light rain nas set in, but it is not likely to last.
