The rem.ark was made ip the Court of Appeal yesterday by the Chief Justice {.Sir Robert Stout) that a sentence of three years in England w’as very different to a similar term in New Zealand.
“Yes,” observer Air Justice Salmond,- “three years at Dartmoor is a very different thing from agricultural occupations and gardening operations in such places as we call prisons here in this country.'’ Referring to the crime in question, which \\as that of pro,Hiring abortion, and was the reason of a substantial sputepep of five years. Sir Robert Stout said it was regarded 9 s one oS the worst- Crimea in New Zealand. He env plmsised the fart that parliament had not decreased the life sentence for this offence-
