ENTERTAINMENT

AT FA.EfKAKAE.IKI CHURCH.

That the popularity of magical entertainment* had not waned was demonstrated by the audience which packed lhe St. Peter'* Church schoolroom. Paekakariki. last Saturday evening. The children were there in numbers, and as the evening wore on they were in their element. It was an evening of mystery, magic as well as mirth predominating, provided by Mr Erie Yeng, Chinese i magician and cartoonist. But Mr Yeng I was only one of the capable performers ! that provided Die programme, because | Mbs M. Johnston played the selection, j "Oon the Wintfs of Song” and Traume- ! rei” on her violin, and met with a j fine reception. Then Miss Dorothy Buck executed an Oriental dance, in a very - striking costume, and instantly capi rivaled the audience, for she was vociferously. encored., and in turn she liberally responded. Attired in an ancient 1 bonnet, a long skirt, and an old shawl, little Miss Hilda Bowcock cleverly reI cited a humorous piece, telling of a I talkative dame's attempt to cheer up u sick friend. She earned a well-deserved encore. Mr Yeng, with the aid of a blackboard and rioine carbons, proceeded to rapidly j sketch some very humorous cartoons, and each sketch was followed by loud apjdause. The entire second half was devoted to a magical act by the same performer. The stage was littered with strange apparatus, which no respectable magician would bo without. Each trick was per-, formed with the accompaniment of patter, which, kept the audience in a continuous ripple of laughter. The outstanding feature of the tricks was Mr Yeng’o ability in producing abundant eggs' from an empty hat, and with the assistance of a very small girl, and an equally small boy managed to keep the house in continuous roars of laughter. A very pretty lantern trick concluded the act. Mrs Holton acted as a very capable accompanist throughout the evening. With the singing of the National Anthem the entertainment was brought to a conclusion.
