RIFLE SHOOTING

LOCAL COMPETITIONS INTERESTING MATCHES HELD AT TRENTHAM. CLOSE CONTESTS. At Trentham on Saturday several local rifle clubs held competitions, and some good shooting was recorded, the contests being close and decidedly interesting. Good scores were put rip, and the indications point to a successful season. Details are as under:— OLD NAVALS THE HIRST SERIES. The Old Navals Club fired the second match of the first series on ranges 300 and 500 yards, at Trentham, on Saturday, for trophies kindly donated by Miss Duncan, Captain E. I). Bell, Messrs K. and I. Duncan, J. W. Murphy, and C. C. Odlin. Next Saturday the team shooting for the C. W. Martin Challenge Badges -will commence, over ranges 500 and 600 yards. Saturday's results were:—

KARORI CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES. The above club fired their second championship match on Saturday, the ranges being SOO and 500 yards. A feature of the shooting vas the welcome return to form of Rifleman Morrison, who headed the list, finishing with 48 at 500 yards. Tho details are as follow

SUBURB CLUB HIRST CHAMPIONSHIP SHOOT. The Suburbs Club fired the first shoot for the club's championship, counting also for the trophies in tho first series. Rifleman Hunt headed the scores with a well made 91. Secretary Hester compiled a brilliant 48 at 500 yards. Next Saturday will also count for the championship, and will be fired at 500 and 600 vands. The following are Saturday's best scores:—

PETONE CLUB TROPHY COMPETITION. The above club on Saturday opened their trophy competitions, it being the first of the opening scries, the scores also counting for the club championship. Trentham was on its best behaviour, and the wind, which came from the right, was fairly steady at times, whioh enabled some of the members to reoord some good totals. A. Ballinger secured the first- place with a total of 97 out of a possible 100. F. Kershaw and R. Askew secured the spoons in the B and C divisions. Results:—

THE GROXTON GUP FOR NATIONAL RIFLE' ASSOCIATION. Tho National Rifle Association of New Zealand has been presented with a handsome cup by Mr H. T. Croxton, of Wellington. This beautiful cup was originally presented to the Dominion Rifle Association by Iho Birmingham Small Arms Company, England, per J. B. Clarkson and C 0.," Ltd., Wellington, and known to all riflemen as the B.S.A. Cup, and awarded each year to the winner of the Bisley Aggregate for long-range shooting. Mr Croxton won tlie cup outright at the D.R.A. meeting in 1921, at. Trentham, and now very generously presented it to tho N.R.A. ns a challenge cup, and to bo awarded each year to the winner of the Bisley aggregate for long-range shooting. The cup in the future will bo known as the Croxton Cup.
