WELLINGTON SOOTH v. MASTERTON. The annual two-Tound fixture between the above clubs was played in Mnsterton during the Labour 11 ay week-end, the two teams spending a most enjoyable time together. Air J. Grbson, the local president, opened the match on Saturday evening by extending a cordial welcome to the Wellington players, for whom Hr F. K. Helling responded. Hr A. Clem as. the Mastelton club’s energetic honorary secretary, then announced the pairing, and a prompt start was made with the play. The first evening’s play left honours easy, the tally being then "7 all.” As Mr E. A. Hicks did not arrive by the late brain, and Air Kelling was leaving for Kummerstein on the Sunday, a few changes were made at the higher boards in the second round. Messrs G. P. Anderson and H. Godtschalk each played three games instead of two, so as to complete the fixtures. The visitors did much better in the second half of the match, and were finally returned winners by 4 games (la —11). Messrs <3. P. Anderson, 11. G. Lee, H. Godtschalk, (Skd VV. J. Fairburn, who were all in great form, enhanced their several good records and contributed largely to the visitors’ success. The only "possible" for the home team was scored by Mr F. P. Welch, an ex-presidont of the cluib. At the conclusion of the match Mr W. Fink very happily voiced the thanks of the visitors for tile many kind attentions shown them, for the valued work of the ladies (Mrs Gibson, Mrs Jackson, Mrs Clemas, and Mies Clemas), who provided refreshments at each session, and to Messrs R. J. Barton, F P. Welch, and A. Clemas for their kind hospitality. Mr Barton responded on behalf of tile Masterton team, his remarks, taken in conjunction with those of Mr Fink, making it clear that one and all had thoroughly enjoyed the match, the full score of which is as follows

In fairness to the Masterton Club, however, it should be stated that several of these contests have been played during the Labour Day week-end, when shearing had been in full swing, and the club has consequently on many occasions been without the services of some of its strongest players. Mr W. Kummer and his elder brother, Mr G. Kummer, are both “climbing the eighties" with, a wonderfully light step. They enjoy a game as keenly as when doing valued pioneering work for Wairarapa chess half a oenfcury ago. During their stay in Masterton the Wellington players had the pleasure of a look through the magnificent library of Mr A Clemas (the local honorary secretary), which contains many old and rare books of great -value and interest. Eight of them are “Incunabula," namely, books printed! prior to the year 1500. One centuries-old book, with a rusty chain fixed to its cover, is entitled “Juvenile Satire," thus disposing of the idea that Bibles were the only books provided with chains in the very long ago. DRAUGHTS WATER.SIDERS’ D.C. v. WORKINGMEN’S CLUB. A two-round draughts match between the above clubs, to decide possession of the AVellington Championship Shield, was played at the Workingmen’s Club's rooms on Saturday evening, and proved very enjoyable. At the interval for refreshments, the club's president, Mr A. E. Ballard., extended a cordial welcome

to the visitors and happily stressed the value of these inter-club contests. He referred to the improvements recently made in the olnVs pTemises, as a result of which their chess and draughts enthusiasts would be working nnder better conditions in future. He was pleased to see that these shield matehes had been revived, after a two-years’ break, and that the present match was likely to provide a close finish. (Applause.) When the last game was accounted for the Waterside™ were returned winners by the small margin of 8 points (14£—11£). The full score of the match is as follows : Watersiders. W.M. Club.
