"£5 A READER”
HOW NEWSPAPERS ARE SOLD LONDON, October 10.
Lord Biddell, the newspaper proprietor, in an amusing speech on newspaper coalitions, related how an excitable gentleman asked him to sell “The News of the World,” which had a circulation of 3,000,000. iHe replied: “i’ll take five pounds per reader.” “That’s a hit stiff, ** said the excitable one, and Lord Riddell replied: “Well, Sir Kdward Hulton has taken two pounds per reader. I’m prepared to split the difference, and take four pounds, less 21 per cent, for cash.”
