SWIMMING
LYALL BAY CLUB.
OPENING OF 17th SEASON.
The seventeenth year of its career was o'iiria'ly embarked upon by the I.yall Bay Lite-saving Club oil Saturday, when Air P. Coira declared the season formally open.
There was little to be said, remarked Mr Coira, except that the members would be expected to “box on.’’ as they had done in former years, and to uphold the fine records that had been established by members past and present. In officially declaring the season to be open, Mr Coira wished the club every success during its 1923-24 season. (Applauie.) A short programme of “rescues’ 1 was then proceeded with. The weather was fine, and a southerly breeze had the effect of staking the water as warm as could be expected. The team of six life-savers, under the able captainship of E. S. Evans, showed good form and effected t-li3 “rescue” in fine style. Tlie team consisted of F. Mollier (support), Winstanley (belt), Hickey (second Jine). Deere (reel), S. Wright (first line), and L. Beggs (res-uscitator). During the afternoon both the Alaranm and the Lyall Bay Clubs employed the use of their lifeboats to participate* in a little ‘'shooting” of the large breakers that were rolling on to tiie beach. This branch of the sport ie a decided acquisition, and as the season progresses the useful side of the boatb will surelr be demonstrated Despite the fact that several spills were recorded those in the boats managed t<i wiold their oars to good effect.. The control ot tbs lbft oar at the stern, a j responsible as well as a difficult job, waa also a tiling of note, but is a section of the work which will require great S The recent southerly gales have made ! a rift in front of the Lyall Bay Club s ' shed, batliing at this part being eome--1 wlmt nskv. One of the boaters who had i (Lebed into the water with a line for the !>oat found himself in difficulties at ! one Stage, and had to be towed back ito shoie. i The swimming and surfing season bide i fair to be a success, and if the enthu- ; siitsn. displayed during the week-end ie anv criterion a failure will not come for want of enthusiasm and hard work.
