BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

BOYS’ COLLEGE PAVILION.

The monthly meeting of the Wellington College Board of Governors was held yesterday afternoon, Mr W. F. Ward (chairman) presiding. The other iromibers present were: Mrs E. . W. Kane, the Mayor (Mr R. A. Wright, M.P.), Or. T. Forsyth. Messrs W. H. Denton, and W. H. Field, M.P. The statement of accounts showed a credit balance as per cashbook of £621 4s ‘ld; payments required £2210 l?s 7d: (Bovs’ College, £1231 2s lid; Girls College £979 14s 8d): fees outstanding, £1317 4s lOd (Boys’ college, £1235 Is sd; Girls’ College, £C3I 13s ’sd); and rents outstanding, £968 17s 4d; leaving a net credit balanoe of £1296 9s 4d.

It was reported that a conference of members of tlio board, representatives of the Old Boys’ Association, and the headmaster of Wellington College (Mr T It. was held at the secretary’* office on Friday, October sth, to consider the question of the pavilion at Wellington College. Ihe members of the board present were: Mr W. F. Ward (chairman), the Mayor, and Mrs Kane; and the Old Boys’ Association was represented by Dr. Elliott and Mr W. W. Cook. The board’s architect (Mr O. A. Lawrence) was also in attendance. After discussion the conference resolved that the site originally agreed upon be adhered to, and it was recommended that the erection of the pavilion bo proceeded wiih at an estimated cost of £I6OO on receiving satisfactory guarantees from, the Old Bovs’ Association. It was also decided that the verandah roof be carried right through if it' would not cost too much moro. ' ‘ The board authorised the work to be proceeded with up to the amount of £I6OO. HEADMASTER’S REPORT. The headmaster’s monthly report showed that tho number on the Wellington Oollego roll was 747, with an average attendance of 94.7 per cent; and that the number of boarders was 63, including seven day boarders. Mr M. F. Turner, B.A , joined the 6taff on October Ist; and Messrs fcf. A. Heron, 13. A., and J. A. G. Simpson would join on November Ist. Ihe college would then have a full staff ior tli-o first time diming the last two years. Four Training College students had been in attendance* recently for observational work. During the month and the early part of next month a number of the teachers were requiring leave for the purpose of attending degree examinations. In the aggregate these necessitated over 50 half-days’ absence from school, which would naturally throw a heavy additional burden on the rest of the staff. Sports day had been fixed for November 9th. MISS McLEAN’S REPORT. M is 9 McLean (principal of the Girls’ Cullege) reported that the average joll number for the past month was 741, with an attendance of 95 per cent., tho number of boarders being the same as last month. Dr. Morgan (director of tho New Zealand branch of tho British Bed Cross Society) had written in connection until the Junior Red Cross Section to thank the school for the part it took in the conduct of the recent Health Week campaign. He mentioned that: “A very attractive feature of the Red Cross stall at the Health Week Exhibition held in the Town Hall was the series of Red Cross posters drawn and sent in by Misses Jean McKay, Dorothy Sales, Nancy Marshall, Biliks Gooder, nnd Fanny Hyman. These drawings (.ho said) were greatly admired by tho public. In awarding tho first prize it lias been very difficult to select one as better than another.” Tho director’s prize of cno guinea was awarded to Billie Gooder, because her drawing “best embodied the spirit of the Red Cross. It depicts the Red Cross gathering into tho Junior Red Cross fold tho children

of the world in one big international bond of -good fellowship.” An extra prize v, as awarded' to Nancy Marshall tor the excellence of her drawing. On each day two girls gave demonstrations in home nursing in the Town Hall; six in fancy costume illustrated certain of the laws of health; a number gave, in the juvenile event, a folk dance and fancy drill as part of the entertainment.
