“ABSOLUTELY GUILTY”

THEFT OF SCRAP IRON. “TRYING CIRCUMSTANCES.” “I plead guilty,” declared George Janies Griffiths, a labourer, aged 50, who was yesterday charged before Mr E. Page, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court, with the theft of ecrap iron valued at £5 7s 6d, the property of J. J. Niven. “I ask you to look the matter over,” continued the accused, “and give me a chance to go straight. I promise it won’t occur again. I am in very trying circumstances, I assure you.” Griffiths was arrested yesterday by Detective Thomas, explained ChiefDetective Kemp, and had been employed by the complainant for the past three years, earning £4. a week. “He became financially embarrassed some time ago,” went on the chiefdetective, “and said he was forced to Bteal the money. He pays £2 a week for rent, has eight children, and six dependent on him. He has one previous conviction for theft having been fined £3 in Gisborne in August, 1918.”

The magistrate intimated that a remand until this morning would ho made in order to receive a report from the probation officer.
