WAIRARAPA SHOW

A PROGRESSIVE SOCIETY INTERESTING COMPETITIONS ON SECOND DAY. ADDITIONAL RESULTS. The second day of the Wairarapa A. and P. Show opened under more favourable weather conditions, the wind, which bad blown with great violence on the previous day, having died down during the night. Looking over a few of the results discloses that several of the animals which came in the money at Hastings miseed the judge's eye at Carterton, this particularly applying to Ayrshire cattle. The Wairarapa Society was formed in 1877, and held its first show in November of the following year. Of the original committee. Sir Walter Buchanan, M.L.C., who served for many years as president, is still an active member. The amount of • prize money offered this year was .£I2OO, in addition to 27 valuable challenge cups, trophies and special prizes of a value of AMO. The society's first consideration has been the breeder, and this has done much to establish it on such a firm basis. A PROGRESSIVE SOCIETY. It may not be generally known that the society has spent upwards of £7OOO in the last seven years in effecting improvements, the latest additions being another pavilion, and further sheep pens at a cost of £425, and a rest room for the Plunket Society. The society has also a new two-storied offioe erected on Memorial square, Carterton, at a cost of £SOOO. The money was raised by mortgage and personal guarantee, but it is expected that the revenue will enable the property to clear off thie indebtedness in fifteen to twenty years, when it will become the means of substantial income to them. Shortly after 9 o’clock yesterday- morning the weather cleared up definitely, and the sun shone pleasantly for the rest of the day, with only a light breeze. Later in the morning the attendance began to improve, and la tha afternoon there was not a blank apace to be seen round the ‘parade ground. It proved tn be an ideal people’s day. and they took the fullest advantage of the opportunity, more than making up for the sparse attendance of the first day. The grand parade took place at 2.30. and the general opinion was that quality nil round was well up to Wairarapa standard.
