POSSIBILITIES IN JAVAP

The Board of Trade has written to the Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union as follows: • “I ha/e to inform you that the Department of Industries and Commerce is at present engaged on an investigation concerning the possibilities of opening up trade with the particularly Java, and has supplied considerable information in this connection to the Chamber of Commerce and tho Manufacturers’ Associations of the Dominion.
“I understand that the matter was recently discussed at a meeting of the Executive of tho Associated Chambers of Commerce of the Dominion; aa > a result meetings are to bo called of interested parties .in the chief centres of tho Dominion with a view to ascertaining whether traders will support the sending of business men- to the Last, in order to ascertain first-bund information as to tho prospects. of trade. Information already in th * hands of my department shows that Australia does a considerable trade in tinned butter. Last year’s export figures show that a total, of- over two million pounds was sent from Australia and that the demand for this butter is increasing. “I have recently had brought under my notice the tin container in which this butter is shipped from Melbourne to tho East. The tin holds just over half a. pound of butter, and was purchased oy a New Zealand visitor in Surabaya" two months ago for 2s Id. Should the Chambers of Commerce decide to support the financing of the ■mission to the East, it is my intention to co-operate with your union. On the other hand, if the mission is nob supported then I shall be glad to convey to you such information as is now in the ilepartment’s possession regarding the possibility of securing trade in ccifain. of tho primary products in this matter up*
