SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP
AT AUCKLAND OR NO RACE.
.Tames Paddon has not yet replied to I.\ Hannan’s request to row their proposed match on the Auckland harbour instead of cn the Wanganui River, but the nest mail from Australia should bring the champion’s answer. Hannan has written explaining his reason for desiring to row at Auckland, where it appears he has been promised the necessary support if the race is rowed there. The Blenheim sculler states that he has nothing against the Wanganui' course, and would be prepared to row there if the backing was available. He says that a suitable course has already been surveyed. on the Auckland harbour in anticipation of the match taking place there, but until Paddon replies nothing definite can be arranged. Paddon has conceded a lot in agreeing to row for the title in New Zealnad at all, but he knows the Wanganui course is a perfectly fair one, whereas he may not be inclined to risk the title on an unknown course. It is evident that there will be no race between the gair unless Paddon gives way, but if .annon cannot induce Paddon to row at Auckland he will endeavour to arrange another match with Hadfield, Sharpe or anyone else, and would be prepared to row at Wanganui or whereever backing was forthcoming.
