THE DAY’S PROGRAMME

THE RUNNING DESCRIBED

SURVEYOR’S CHAMPION PLATE.

There was a rush to be on Relic in the Spring Trial Stakes, with which the day’s racing opened. The southerner held his position till the close of the machine, and the next the public Bought were Pelham. Penelephon, and All Gold. Pelham went to the front as soon as the field settled down, and led from Heathcote, Panim. and All Gold. Relic, an the rails, was at the head of - the next bunch, with Penelephon on the outer. Pelham led into the straight with a three lengths break, and below the distance he was challenged bjv Black Ronald, who came on the outside. Then Anticipate shot up on the rails, hut when called on Pelham went on to win by a length and a half. Black Ronald was just in front of Anticipate, and then came Penelephon, Bright Eyes, and Relic ALARIC AGAIN. Several horses were fairly evenly backed for tilie Tararua Handicap, but Alaric wound up a slightly better favourite than Star Ranger and Tawehi. Star Ranger was the first to show out, hut Tawehi soon ran up to biih, and: the pair piloted the field along the back. Crossing the top Tawehi had charge from a bunched field. Tawehi led into the straight, where Alaric, j Star Ranger, and Mountain Signal challenged. Alaric easily held off the! others and won by a length from Auck- 1 land, who was a nectk in front of Star Ranger, with Elvaette, Tawehi, and Submerge next. SIR FANCIFUL’S HURDLES.

Bon Spec was the most fancied of the field for the Hurdles, and there was big money for Listowel and Comical. As aoon as the barrier was lifted Bon Spec rushed to the front, flew the first fence, and led through the straight by several lengths. Gamecock fell at the first fence. Petunia, Nukumai, and Sir Rosebery were at the head of the bunch that followed Bon Spec out of the straight. Bon Spec entered the back stretch with an eight-length lead. Sir Rosebery, Nukumai, and Comical being at the head of the others. At the five furlongs Otauru Kid had run up to within a couple of lengths of Bon Spec. Sir Rosebery, Nukumai. and Comical were at the head of the others, with Oarawock also showing up. Bon Spec entered the straight first but was tiring, and Sir Fanciful, who had come round the field at the turn, took charge as heads were straightened up for tine run home. Sir Fanciful won without being extended by three lengths from the little fancied Bonny Rill. Nukutnai was a close third, Otauru Kid fourth, and Gold Star fifth. EASY FOR MOTLEY.

Motley was backed down to a very short price in the Roseneath Handicap. The early leaders were Tanadees and Fool’s Paradise, but in the straight Motley took charge and won hy three lengths from Tanadees, with Fool’s Paradise a fair third and Voltore fourth. Lamorack jumped a trestle before the race and disposed of M«Fldnn. The horse was.then withdrawn from the contest. Orishna fell at the bottom of the straight. THE BIG HANDICAP. The South Islanders, Ardour and Pilliewinkie were the favourites for the Pearce Handicap, with Kilbird arid tbo Riddiford bracket (Quest and Scion) well in the market. From a beautiful start the field ran in line for a fuTlong when Zouave showed out from Happy Days. Ardour, Pnntemps and Quest were well up and Scion was last. At the five furlongs Zouave was in charge from Quest, with Printemps, Admiral Oodrington and Kilbird not far away. Zouave led into the straight where challenges were thrown out by Kilbird, Stork, Ardour and Admiral Oodrington. Kilbird was in front at the distance but with a late run Pilliewinkie mowed down the field and won by two lengths flora Kilbird. Stork was third, Martian Miss fourth, and Cleaeanta, and Ardour r-ext.

SURVEYOR BEATS FAVOURITES. Razzle Dazzle wound up favourite foi the Champion Plate, nearly £IOOO bet tor backed than Thespian and carrying almost twice as much money us Surveyor. The field was sent away to a perfect start. Razzle Dazzle at once went to the front and led out of the straight, followed by Surveyor, with Thespian close handy. At the mile the order was Razzle Dazzle, Surveyor, Rouen, Thespian, Sunart, Enthusiasm and Trespass. Rouen had run up alongside Razzle Dazzle before the five furlongs was reached. Surveyor, on the rails, was lying in behind the loaders and then came Thespian, Sunart, Enthusiasm and Trespass. On the bend the order was unchanged. Razzle Dazzle and Rouen entered the straight together, but below the distance Surveyor challenged. He soon hit the front and going on won in great style by two lengths. Rouen was a. head behind Razzle Dazzle, Sunart fourth and Thespian last. A GREAT FINISH. The public would have nothing but Mireusonta and Hipo in the Nainai Handicap, and their judgment proved correct. Mireusonta got out well and led Gazewortliy on to the course proner, followed hv ]|i)M>. Hipo -diet up alongside Mireusonta below the distance and the pair fought out a great finish, Hipo winning by a hoar). AA’aipatu was a poor third and Aeriform fiourth. LAST OF THE DAY. TK? last race of the day saw Solitrain, Kenmore and Tinohari c'-enly hacked, and all three were at a fairly short price. Tinohari began as well ns anything and was in the van over

the first part of the journey. Soli form was close up and he led on to the course proper and was still in charge at the furlong from home where Refrigeration was brought along. Under pressure Refrigeration won on the post , front Soli form and the next to finish were Misgovern and Kenmore. TOTALISATOII FIGURES.
