AN EVENTFUL VOYAGE. With the arrival of the German ship Barmen at Antofagasta on August 18th last, came to an end one of the most eventful voyages for some years. The Barmen, which is a. Germau ship, originally sailed from Rangoon as far back as September Bth, 1922, for Tal Tal. Nothing more was heard of her until she unexpectedly arrived at Sydney on December 23rd last, in distress. She was subsequently taken to doqk, where the necessary repairs were carried out, and the vessel eventually loaded, a full cargo of coal at Newcastle, finally sailing from there on June Bth, thus doing the run across the Pacific in 71 days. An interesting fact, concerning this vessel is that she was the first German vessel to visit Sydney since the war, which made her forced visit doubly interesting. A FINE STEAMER, Tho Blue Funnel steamer Meriones>, which is at present at Port Pirie, is one of the fastest and finest cargo vessels 1 that lias ever visited Australia. The Meriones is a product of Palmer’s Shipbuilding Yard, Hebburn-on-Tyno, and was only built last year. She 16 a vesvel of 7684 tons gross, with a length of 472 feet, beam of 58 feet, depth of 33 feet, and was constructed primarily for the company’s Eastern trade. Like her sister-ship, the Meriones is turbinedriven, and on the run down from Kobe to Newcastle averaged 15 knots an hour, and taking but a little over twelve days, which stamps her as one of the fastest cargo steamers afloat. After loading concentrates at Port Pirie, the Meriones , will come to Sydney to commence loading for Dunkirk, Hull, and London, for which ports she will receive prompt dispatch.

RECORD DAY FOR PORT OF SYDNEY. Sydney worthily upheld its reputation as the premier port of the Commonwealth yesterday, when all previous records for the port were broken (says the “Australian Shipping List" of October 9th). Altogether twenty-two vessels, of an aggregate gross tonnage of 116,601 readied port. Of this fleet, twelve wevo vessels engaged in trade beyond the port and nine were from inter-State ports. Pride of place was taken by the White Star steamer Ceramic, of 18,495 tons gross, followed by the Esperanoe Bay (13,853), Port Adelaide (8422), Port Campbell (8308), Berwickshire (7380), Tennessee (7124), Demodocus (6a34), Hagen (5988), .Carina ;5456), Carignano (5359), City of Christiania (4840). and Drafn (1631). "The largest of the inter-State traders to arrive was the Dimboola, from Fremantle and Adelaide, then followed the Bombala, Goulburn, Arawatta, Komura, Corio, Poolta, and Kamona, while the Union Steamship Company’s steamer Waikouaiti arrived from New Zealand. The arrival of so many overseas vessels taxed the pilot service to the very limit, so much so that, in addition to the usual staff at Watson’s Bay, the serivees of Captain Mcßae, of the Captain Cook, and two harbour pilots were requisitioned. The excellent manner in which -the work of handling this fleet was carried out tfie greatest credit on those concerned, and on the facilities of the port generally.
