SLUICING FOR COAL
A REEFTON PROPOSAL.
The methods employed in coal nita* mg are many and varied, and it is therefore not surprising to hear that cue company in the Rcefton district is seriously considering a proposal to operate its coal area© by sluicing (savs iho Reef ton correspondent of tfie Christchurch “Press”). This is the Ferndale Coal Company, which has its headquarters at Timcru, and which is operating in the Ferndale Valley, about five miles from Reef ton.
It is claimed that a very large area of coel exists here with a seam right through the floor of the valley*, and outcrops a© far as the Waitaliu River. Ibe over-burden is considered very light, and it is thought that sluicing would be a more economical method of obtaining the coal, which is semibituminous and of the highest quality.
A stratum of fireclay is also said to b© admirably suited for the manufacture of firebricks.
