THE DAY’S PROGRAMME

THE RUNNING DESCRIBED SOME GOOD FINISHES. The first event on the programme was the Taita Handicap, a race for two-year-olds. Inferno’s looks gained him a host of admirers and he wound up a better favourite than Gi ishua. There was also solid support for Lamo•raek, Yoltore and Tanadees. Voltore got out very smartly and 3Con had a good break on the field, while Inferno, who had drawn the inside, was well up. Inferno took charge at the bottom of the straight and went on to win nirely bv half a length from Voltore. Tanadees, who ran about a lot was a close third and the next to finish were Crishua, Kiki and Kilmar. ARDOUR BEATS SUGGESTION. Martian Miss and Counter Attack were withdrawn from the Wainui Handicap, for which Suggestion was backed down to nearly evens. Next in demand were Ardour, Lady Ben, and Crown Star. A beautiful start was effected, and the first to show out was Printemps, with Ardour, ’Helen Rufus, and Listowel well up. Listowel hit the front after going a furlong, and Aeriform ran up alongside him, with Lady Kotiropo and Ardour handy. On the bend Aeroform was in charge from Listowel, Lady Kotiripo, Suggestion, Lady Ben, Helen Rufus, and Ardour. Aeriform and Listowel entered the straight almost on terms, and they were immediately challenged by Suggestion, who came through on the rails, and Ardour, who came on the outer. The four raced in line till half a furlong from home, where Listowel gave up the fight, and Aeriform also faded. Ardour finished best, and won by half a length. Aeriform was a length away, and then came Listowel, Helen Rufus, Oleaeanta, Printemps, and Lady Kotiripd. A NOSE VICTORY. Star Ranger, Soliform, Penelephon, and Last Crust carried most support in the Rimutaka Handicap. Soliform went to the front as soon as the field settled down, but before half the journey had been covered Relic was in charge, and Alabama was in behind the leaders. Relic led into the straight, but did not stay on, and Tinohari and Soliform fought out the finish. In a contest Soliform won by a nose. Relic was a fair third, and All Gold was fourth. MARK TIME’S WIN. A nice field paraded for the Wellington Racing Clulb Handicap. The Kemhall trio was sent out favourite, better backed than Mark Time, Kilbird, and Merry Day. Zouave drew the rails, and next to him were Surveyor, Arch Salute, Insurrection, and Rouen, while Pilliewinkie and Vagabond were on the outer. The start was a good one, and as soon as the field settled down Quest went to tho front, followed by Suryey-

or Sunart, Scotch Mixture, and Arch Salute, with Vagabond and Stork in the rear. At the mile the order was Quest. Sunart, Surveyor, and Rouen, with Merry Day going well on the outer. Six furlongs from home Quest still had charge from Surveyor and Sunart, and Mark Time was well up. Quest carried on the running to the straight, where Surveyor, Admiral Codrington, Mark Time, and Sunart were all in the fighting line. Bellow the distance Mark Time drew out, and, though challenged by Surveyor, he won by nearly a length. Surveyor just kept off Pilliewinkie j who- finished very fast from the middle of the field. Bonnetter was a fair fourth, and then came Quest. Kilbird ATch Salute, Sunart, and Admiral Codrington. Merry Day and Zouave were last. GOOD DIVIDEND IN HURDLES. Comical was backed like a certainty in the hurdles, but he made a bad jump five furlongs from home, and from there on did not go well. Sir Rosebery, Otaru Kid, Nugumai, Lochson, Comical, and Sir Fanciful was the or der passing the stand. There was no great change on the way round. Nuiumai, Sir Rosebery, Sir Fanciful, and Comical were not far apart coming into the straight. Sir Rosebery finished on strongly, and beat Sir Fanciful by a length, with Lochson another length away. Comical and Nukumai were together next, and after them came Otaru Kid. Blue Socks was last. Sir Rosebery paid double figures. THE WELLESLEY STAKES. The only withdrawal from the Wellesley Stakes was Padonma. Backers had to accept a very short price about Killochra, hut he pulled them through well. Miss O’Dille and Fool’s Paradise led on to the course proper from Killodira, who took charge below the distance. A furlong from home Motley drew level with Killochra, hut when called on Killochra went away and won by a length. Rouex was a poor third, Fool’s Paradise fourth, and Pent Btro fifth, Lady Isinglass sixth, Miss O’Dille seventh, and Solfraid last. LADYFINGERS TOO GOOD. In the Shorts Handicap the publio went for Thespian, Ladyfingers, Gold Light, and Mireusonta. Lady fingers waa in front practically all the way, Thespian and Mireusonta being well up. Thespian and Mireusonta did not run on in the straight, and the only serious challenge came from Tukia, who fin. ished well, but could not get nearer than a length to Ladyfingers. Thespian was a poor third, and Mireusonta fourth. CLOSE FINISH IN LAST EVENT. The day’® sport closed with the running of the October Handicap. With about thirty starters in the field it looked like sheer 'gambling to hack anything. Nevertheless bettors were again well on the mark, solidly supported, horses filling the places. Alaric was the actual favourite, and in a great finish he just beat Kilns, whose finish ing effort out Bugle Note out of second money. Atapo was placed fourth. \
