INCREASING POPULATION. WINTER TAKES TOLL OF AGED PERSONS. The total births registered for tb urban areas in New Zealand tor the month of September amounted to 935, as against 1126 in August—a decrease of 171. The deaths in September were 513. a decrease of 238 as compared with the previous month. Of the total deaths males contributed 271, females 242. Fifty-eight of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 11.81 per cent, of the whole number. Forty-four of these were under one year of age. In Wellington the births were 167, or 1.49 per 1000 of the population, while the deaths were 77, or 0.69 per 1000 of the population, against 1.66 per 1000 births and 0.81 per 1000 deaths for September last year. Of_ the total number of deaths in the Dominion. 240 were of persons over 65 years of age, of which seven were between 90 and 96, and no fewer than 85 were octogenarians. CAUSES OF DEATH. There were 43 deaths due to cancer of various types, of which 12 were in Auckland, only 4 in Wellington, and 11 in Christchurch; 10 from tuberculosis, and one from diabetes melUtus. There were fire suicides, and 17 from accidents or violence.
