ANGLICAN SYNOD
AUCKLAND SESSIONS. PLEA FOR GREATER CHURCH ACTIVITY'. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, October 19. The Auckland Anglican Synod opened to-day. In his charge, Biehop Averill made a strong plea for greater concern by the Church in the dark life interests of the people, in the problems of industry and society, and generally to identify itself more closely with the great movements for the commonwealth. Of the many disappointments which we have experienced since the great war. he said, perhaps the failure of tTie Church generally to realise, assimilate, and put into practice the oft-repeated advice of many of the best of the chaplains is one of the most tragic. Doubtless the desire to settle down again after years of unreet, anxiety, and high pressure is responsible for the fading of the vision which seemed so clear then, and for the return of that muddling which is so detrimental to real spiritual progress.
