RUSSIAN GRAIN
MOMENTOUS AGREEMENT. BEGINNING OF TRADE. Australian and N.Z. Table Association. LONDON, October 18. The “Evening Standard” states that influential quarters in the city regard the Russian wheat agreement as the most far-reaching commercial arrangement made since the signature of the Anglo-Russian Trade Agreement. An important section of the “Big Five bank is prepared to give credit for the new scheme up to £1,000,000. The arrangement is regarded ae the precursor of the importation of other Russian raw materials. If only one million pounds’ worth of grain is shipped to Britain in the season it would form the basis for the supply to Russia of more than double that value of British manufactured products. When Mr Stanley Bruce was questioned on the agreement, he admitted its importance in regard to Empiregrown wheat, and said he hoped that some method could be devised to protect the Empire wheat countries.
