SETTLER RUNS AMOK IN PUBLIC SCHOOL
TWO CHILDREN SHOT DEAD, OTHERS INJURED
Per Press Association. WAIHI, October ip. The little goldmining township of Waikino, which is situated about five miles From Waihi, and nine from Paeroa, was the scene of a terrible tragedy yesterday morning. A settler of the district entered the public school, informed the headmaster of his intention to shoot the children, and when the headmaster endeavoured to attract his attention while the children and assistant teachers made good their escape, he was shot in the jaw. As the children rushed panic-stricken from the building, the man fired shots at them, with the result that two were killed and four injured. The Waihi police and local residents were quickly on the scene, the schoolhouse was stormed, guns and revolvers being used. A constable was shot in attempting to effect the man’s capture, but finally the aggressor threw away his revolver, and was arrested. It is believed that Higgins, the man in question, set out deliberately to commit the crime.
