NAVY MAINTENANCE

AUSTRALIA WILL HELP WHOLE EMPIRE SHOULD MAKE CONTRIBUTION. A DOUBLE PURPOSE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received October 18, 9.30 p.m.) LONDON. October 18. Mr Stanley Bruce, interviewed by the “Morning Post,” said: *T must stress the point that co-operation in the maintenance of the Navy should entail contribution by all the Empire. Australians, at any rate, do not intend to sit back and see the taxpayers of the United Kingdom bear a disproportionately heavy share of the cefet of equipping an Empire Navy for a double task. As we see that task. it is, first, the Empire’s defence, and eecondly, to ensure that the Empire shall continue to speak with full authority in the halls of every international conference called to promote peace throughout the world.” “THE RIGHT DOCTRINE.”

The “Morning Post,” in an editorial, says: “Mr Bruce presents what may be described as the right Imperial doctrine” ; and adds, alluding to Australia’s willingness to contribute: ‘ We can only say that if such is the spirit of the dominions there is no need to fear for the future. It is true enough that while the requirements of naval defence are increasingly onerous, the taxation of this country, owing to the commitments of the war, makes it difficult to defray the whole cost of the protection of trade routes.” AT THE CONFERENCE NAVAL FOLICY DISCUSSED.
