A lengthy discussion took place last night on the recommendation of the works committee of the City Council, that authority be granted for the erection of motor garages in Kenwyn torrace (Jackson), Maida Yale road (Gyles), and Fair view Crescent (Ballinger and Wilson). Cr A. L. Monteith, Af.P v contended that if these cases were in contravention of the "bylaw against buildings being erected within 33 feet of the centre of the read, the council had no power to grant authority for them. Cr M. F. Luekie said that the matter was one that should come before the by-laws committee, not the works committee. It was absurd, he held, that people should be prohibited from erecting garages in their own properties, without setting them back eight to 12, feet, simply because the road did not happen to be 66 feet wide. Cr T. For&ytK (chairman of the works committee), maintained that it was an engineering matter. (Laughter). The recommendation was agreed to. “Appliances of all kinds are used to a surprising extent in the average American home, and avoiding to a recent census, taken by one of the largo companies it was found that in u typical case of 1000 residences, 720 possessed flat irons, 360 vacuum cleaners, and 295 washing machines, in addition to numerous fans, heating, and cooking appliances,” remarked Mr M. Cable, chief city electrical engineer, referring last night to his visit to the United States.
