Tonh© and family, after two months’ absence in Australia* returned by the Ulimaroa yesterday. The Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers* Decoration has been awarded to Major C. E. Clifton, retired list. Mr C. W. Hervey (Christchurch) is on a visit to Wellington, and is stopping at the Empire Hotel. Mr John Brown, B.Sc., has been appointed instructor in agriculture for the AVanganui Education Board, with headquarters at Taihape. During the absence in Australia of Mr F. W. Hart, his position as clerk of. the Magistrate’s Court. Wellington, will be filled by the assietant-clerk, Mr W. S. Jones. Mr Charles M. “erkeley, who arrived, in Wellington by the Ulimaroa, is busy making the preliminary arrangement* for the J. C. Williamson Comic Opera season, "The Cabaret Girl, ’ etc. Lieutenant-Commander David Foden and Mrs Foden, who recently arrived from England by the Botorna, are leav. ing to-day by the Ulimaroa for Sydney and Melbourne. Mr E. W. Abercombie, of Auckland, is relieving clerk of the court at Pahiatua until a permanent appointment is arranged. Mr Hiram Hunter, who is in Christchurch, will join the president of the Arbitration Court in that city, and proceed with the court to Dunedin to-mor-row. Mr B. P. Ward, inspecting officer in the Justice Department, is at present on a visit to Dunedin on departmental business. Dr S. C. C. Sinclair has been appointed assistant . pathologist at the Otago University,-to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Dr C. S. Hicks. Mr B. W. G. Smith has been appointed by the Public Service Commissioner as an inspector of factories, and of weights and measures, Mr Arthur Paape and Mr M. O'Brien (Otautau) are in Wellington in connection with the New Zealand Licensed V iotuallers’ Association executive meeting. Mr and Mrs Hugh Morrison, o! Wairarapa, will leave by the Maunganui in January, en route for England. They will travel by way of America and will probably be absent about 11 months. Mr O. B. Bendall (Wellington) has been visiting Christchurch. Messrs G. S. Matthews and W. E. Jackaon, of Wellington, have also been in the bouth Island. Dr C. E. Maguire, medical superintendent of the Auckland Hospital, ha* been granted six weeks' leave of absence by the Hospital Board. Dr Maguire is to attend the Australasian Medical Congress at Melbourne.

Mr C. O. Pratt, secretary of the Waka. tipu Golf Club, who has arrived in Wellington, was presented with a piece of plato on leaving Queenstown by members of the club, in recognition of his good serTioes.

Auld, of the State Advances Department, 'has entered hospital foK the purpose of undergoing an operation, ilr Auld has been a keen Association football enthusiast for many years, and in sport generally. Messrs F. W. Furkert, Engineer-in-chief (Public Works Department), J. B. Marks Engineer, Alexandra), J. A. C. Bayne (Inspecting Engineer, Mine* Department), and Alexander Whitiey (Inspector of Mines) (says the ‘Otago Daily Times") paid a flying visit to the district in connection with the Kavaray Mining Company’s application for a license to construct a dam at the out'et to Lake Wakatipu.

Mr H. R. Smith, the retiring town clerk of Christchurch, was praised for his services to the city by the members of the Christchurch Drainage Board, and the following resolution was passed:— “That the board learns with regret that Mr H. B. Smith has found it necessary to relinquish his duties as Town Clerk owing to failing health, and extends to him every goon wish in his retirement, and hopes that he will be long spared to associate himself wtih the citixens of Christchurch.”

Members of the stafl of the Dunedin Customs Department met to bid farewell to Mr L. G. Nutttng, who has been promoted to the position of assistant examining officer at Christchurch. Lin - behalf of the staff, the Collector of Customs (Mr H. B. Spence) expressed good wishes for Mr Nutting’s success in hi* new position, and presented him with some tokens of their regard. the presents included a fountain pen and pencil for Mr Nutting and a gift for his mother. The recipient suitably respond- - ed.

At last night’s meeting of the Wellington City Council. Councillor W. H. Bennett, the senior councillor, on nis own behalf and that of the council generally. heartily congratulated the Deputy - Mayor (Councillor Martin Luckiej, temporarily presiding over the council, upon his return to health and to the council table. AH his colleagues, lu said, had greatly regretted his absence from the council meetings for some months past on account of illness; and he expressed the hope that he would not find his office and his civic duties too much of a strain. (Applause.) Mr Luckie thanked Councillor Bennett and other councillors for their congratulations and good wishes. He was fullyrestored to health, he was glad to say: and what had given him more pleasure than anvthing else was the very kind congratulations he had received on all hands on account of his recovery.
