OPEN VERDICT
STILL A MYSTERY SHOOTING IN MELBOURNE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. (Received October 17, 10.10 p.m.) MELBOURNE,.October 17. At the inquest on the victims of the South Melbourne tragedy, the coroner returned a verdict that the two women died of gunshot wounds, but that there was no evidence to show who fired the shots. Mrs Dougherty and Mrs Lay were found lying dead in a house in South Melbourne at midnight on October 3rd. Edward Dougherty, the husband 1 of one of the women, told the police liis wife shot Mrs Clay and then herself. He said he called to see his wife, and an argument ensued, during which he produced the pistol. His wife snatched it from him and fired several shots, one of which struck Mrs Lay, who in falling knocked Dougherty down. When he rose he sahv liis wife lying on the Sfioor. The police detained Dougherty on a charge of carrying an unlicensed firearm.
