HATAITAI AFFAIRS
EASTERN SUBURBS TUNNEI-.
PROPOSED TRAM EXTENSION.
A well-attended meeting of the Hataii” l i , •Ekctors’ Association was held this week, Mr E. A. Batt presiding.
Reference was made to the proceedings of the Eastern Suburbs League Confexv enee last week, and the unanimity which prevailed m support of the Elizabeth street-Rixon grove route for the Eastern Suburbs tunnel. In view of the fact that an impression is existing that the Hataiitai Association endorsee the Ellice street route, the secretary was authorised to supply the Press with details of the protest sent to the City Council in connection with that proposal, thus placing citizens generally in possession of the true state of affairs us far as the association is concerned. This subject is referred, to under a separate heading).
Tho corporation milk department’s atLeu lion is to be directed to the injury {sustained by the roads owing to tho milk-cart wheels being locked by steol shoe;, which not only cut the road surface badly, but must of necessity be detrimental to the wearing capacity of the .steel, tyres. It is considered that an effective braking system could be devised which would not be 60 hard on tho macadamised roads.
Interest was evinced in the City Council investigation committee and the Civic League's activities in connection therewith were commended.
Application is being made for some of the seats donated to the council by tbo Orphans' Club, as this accommodation is badly needed in various portions of the suburbs.
The tramway committee's advice that the proposed Waipapa road tram extension will not be considered until March, TJ2J, was received. This decision was regretted, and it was doeided to renew the application about tho time indicated.
