MINISTERIAL The Hon. D. H. Guthrie (Minister fop Lands) passed through Feilding yesterday morning on his return to Wellington from Auckland, and was met at the station ami accorded a hearty welcome by a large number of his constituents. Sir Joseph Ward is at present in Christchurch. Archbishop F. Redwood, S.AI., D.D., of Wellington, is in the South Island. Mr W. 11. Booth, of Middle Run, Carterton, is visiting Wellington. Mr Justice Frazer and Mr W. Scott, of the Arbitration Court, leave Weliingto l for Dunedin to-morrow night. Mr M. F. Instone, stores audi inspector at Auckland, has been oremoted to be audit examiner at Christchurch. Mr N. W. Ccfclirane has been appointed consulting mining engineer to the Auckland University College Coun* cil. Mr R> A. Hogan, clerk in the Auckland office of the State Fire Department, has been promoted senior clerk at Hamilton. Mr F. W. Hart, clerk of the Magistrate's Court at Wellington, leaves oa Friday by the Ulimaroa on a holiday trip to Australia. The Mount Roskill Road Board has ap* pointed Mr V. Y. Warren, clerk to the board, and Mr H. L. Jessop building inspector. Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., who has been on relieving duty at Auckland,-has returned to Wellington. Mr Hunt is to take up his residence in the northern city Mr W. K. McAlpine and Mr F. R. Cliraie, president and organiser respectively of the Canterbury Progress League* will leave this week on a visit to the West Coa&t. Mr Edward Atmore has received, the appointment of district manager of tho Australian Provincial Assurance Association, Ltd., for Otago and Southland. His headquarters will be at Dunedin. Mr T. H. Pelling, stationmaster at Otira, is to be transferred to’ Woolston, and will be succeeded by Mr H. C. Langford, off the goods department, Christchurch. Messrs Mourant and Herron, circuit stewards of the Taranaki street Methodist Church, have been appointed as representatives to Synod, with Messrs Strang and Hindi© as subsitutes. Mr William Scott, who has been appointed general manager of the New Zealand Picture Supplies, has arrived in Wellington. He was accompanied by Air E. J. Kighton, managing director of the company. Licenses as lay readers have been granted by the Bishop of Wellington (Dr Spioit) to Dr C. G. Kemp,, of -Welling*ton. Mr S. W. Brooker and Mr A. E. E. Durn. of Otaki, and Mr G. J. Fitzpatrick and Mr Leonard J. Wild, of Feilding. At the meeting of the Taranaki street Methodist Church very high appreciation was expressed of the work amongst the young people and as a local preacher, of Mr Cyril Burtccy, and he was congratulated on accepting the position of travelling secretary to the Young Men*4 Bible Class Movement in New ; Zealand. Mr and Airs John Stallworthy, eenr., two of the oldest presidents of the Northern Wairoa district, are seriously ill. Mr Stallworthy formerly represented Kaipara in Parliament, and, despite blindness, still holds a number of public positions. Mr and Airs Stallworthy, who celebrated their golden wedding a few months ago, enjoyed good health until recently.

Advice has been received in Wellington of the death of Air William Davenish Meares, a well-known figure in. business circles in Christchurch for many years. Air Meares was general manager of the Alliance Assurance Company front tho time the company commenced bust res* in New Zealand in 1882 until he re signed in 1315. He was a life member ol the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce.

A[r W. R. C. Macpherson, accountant of the Wanganui branch of the National Bank, has been appointed manager of the bank's branch at Nelson, in succession to Mr Cecil King, who is shortly retiring on pension, after 48 years* service Mr Macpherson is leaving Wanganui early in November, and will be suoceeded by Air C. F. Bruce, at present chief bill clerk in the local office.

Air R. J. Adlington, assistant-foreman in the job-printing composing room of the

“New Zealand Herald.*’ received the congratulations of the proprietors and 6taff upon the completion of fifty years’ service. As a token of the firm’s regard a cheque was presented by Mr H. Horton to Mr Adlington. who. in returning thanks, mentioned that Air M. Connollj and AD A. D. Bruce had already give 4 fifty years’ service to the firm.

The death is announced, after a long and painful illness. of Mr W. A. Millar, of Lvall Bay, who was formerly wellknown in the sporting world and to the en 1 was an enthusiastic follower of boxing of the history of which he had a wonderful knowledge. During the wai he served as sergeant in the Samoa® Foice. and the effect of a long sojourn in the tropical climate of Samoa led to the final break-down of his health. Ponder, a former Inspector of Police, end was a well-known resident of Wellington.
