AN ALPINE THRILL
UNPRECEDENTED HA PPKN IN U. A climbing accident unprecendented in Alpine annals occurred on the Monch (13,465 ft). Mme. Coninx waa descending with a. guide named Biscboff when the guide fell into a deep orevasse The woman climber, who was roped to Bischoff, threw herself in the ice in ord'er to avoid being pulled after him. Biechoff was thus suspended in mid-air, and Mme. Coninx could neither pull him up nor move herself. This terrible situation had lasted several hours when Bischoff decided to sacrifice his life for the woman. Ho begged her to cut the rope, which, after protesting, she did. The rope, however, had. become deeply embedded in the ice and froze to it. It thus continued to support the guide, and Mme. Coninx hurried down to the valley to summon aid. ’Three hours later a search party arrived from Morgen and relieved Bischoff, who was uninjured. ,
