NEW HEBRIDES MURDER
PLANTER KILLED AND EATEN. The Rev. C. H. Parker, of tlx9 fiteventh Day Mission, writing from the New Hebrides, dvea further details of tho murder ana eating of the white planter at Santo. The victim’s name was Mr John Gtapoott, and he was a brother of the Hon. F. O. Clapcott, of Ba, Fiji. Mr dapeott was a, planter in South Santo, where the natives are particularly truculent. He suffered from deafness, and was for some time greatly annoyed by the natives stealing his oOooarmte, and remonstrated with them. He also reported the matter to Captain Merton King, the District Commissioner. Mr Salisbury, a Government agent; who was formerly in the service of the Pacific Cable Board in Suva, visited the district, and remonstrated with the natives, but took no active steps. It was common talk among the white settlers that trouble would ensue, and unfortunately the worst happened. The deceased was a single man, and was greatly respected. A good portion of hie body was eaten by his murderers.
