HOSPITAL LEVY

LOCAL BODIES’ BURDEN.

“JUST ABOUT BANKRUPT.’

‘This would just about bankrupt the local bodies,” declared Mr J. W. McICwan, Mayor of Petone, at the Borough Council meeting last night, on the subject of hospital maintenance. The secretary of tho 'Wellington Hospital Board stated in a communication that in regard to the sum already provided in the estimates for extensions to the nurses’ homes, it was found necessary to make several important additions and the cost would, therefore, be considerably increased. Tho Mayor pointed out that this represented a very considerable increase. and that it was understood that further alterations to the hospital wcie to be carried out, which would in all represent a sum of £150,000. In addition, 20 per cent, more nurses were required. It was decided to write to the board, stating that the council would bear the -cost of a loan, but it considered the levy too large a sum to be paid in one amount.
