TELEPHONE CHARGES
TIME FOR PAYING UP NO DISCONNECTIONS THROUGH INCREASED CHARGES BUSINESS AND PRIVATE ’PHONES. Yesterday was the last day for paying up telephone dues, and although the time had been extended for a week, a “Times" reporter inquired if there had been any great- increase in tho disconnections owing to the increased charges, as it had been reported that such had been the case in Dunedin. Tho official reply was that there waa at present no indication that there was anything abnormal in the position, and that telephone subscribers were paying up well, this being followed with an invitation to see the number of people waiting at tho counter to pay their accounts . A statement on the position was usually made at the end of the month, it was explained to the “Times” man, but sooner if there was anything unusual. Earlier in the day a local subscriber who had just returned to the city, suggested to the department that the city business houses were paying for the cheap telephones in the country, and that in some oases private telephones were being used for business purposes in order not to have a business ’phone The department, however, has no knowledge of such being tho case.
