OBITUARY
MR T. F. CHEEBEMAN. A Press Association message from Auckland reports the death of Thomas F. Cheeseman, curator of Auckland Museum since 1875. Mr Cheeseman, who was 76 years of age, was a keen student of botany from his youth up. He published many scientific books and papere dealing with botany, the principal publication being a manual of New Zealand flora, recognised throughout the world as a standard work on this subject. He also put> Ushed "Illustrations of New Zealand Flora,” and in addition about a hundred. smaller memoirs. The manual is a text book of greatest value to all students of botany, and no work of the kind has been, and continues to be, so largely consulted. Many additions, 1 made to the identified specimens of the New Zealand flora since the book was published, have rendered a new edition necessary, and Mr CheesemAn has been engaged on the preparation *of this for some time. In 1918 Mr Cheeseman was awarded the Hector Memorial Medal in recognition of the value of his botanical research work. „ Mr Cheeseman wee elected a Fellow of the Linnaean Society in 1873, and. last ; M*y was awarded the society's medal for research work in New Zealand. He also was a Fellow of the Zoological Society and a Fallow of the Royal Society since 1911. Mr Cheeseman. was born in Hull, Yorkshire, in 1847, and \Mp the son of the Rev. Thomas Cheeseman, dissenting minister. He came to Auckland with hie parents in 1854. and is survived by Mrs Cheeseman, one son. Major Cheeeeman, and one daughter, Mrs Grant Taylor, of Walton.
