BOWLING

HUTT CLUB. The weather on Saturday was all that Could be desired for the opening of the Hutt Bowling and Tennis Club. The I lovely grounds offered an excellent setting I for the variety of colour provided by the gay summer frackings of the many ladies present, and the fluttering of numerous flags in the gentle breeze. Mr C. H. Treadwell, president of the I club, in declaring the greens open for I play, spoke in a very happy vein. He I said his remarks would be brief, very | brief, and as an indication of his intenj tion, warned the gentlemen not to re--1 move their hats. After wishing the j players a very successful season, and extending a welcome to the visitors, he called won hiß daughter-in-law (Mrs A. ft. L. Treadwell) to roll up the kitty, which ehe did amidst cheers from the large crowd on the banks. was soon in full swing, rinks from Wellington, Karori, Central, Hataitai, Petone, and representatives from other clubs all engaging in a friendly bout with the local players. The ladies of the croquet section dispensed afternoon tea in the pavilion, the tables of which were gaily decorated with the club’s colours and a profusion of beautiful spring blooms. Owing to the large number present the ladies were kept very busy. The greens played much better than was anticipated. In common with other greens throughout the Wellington district, the Hutt greens have suffered from the tardy spring growth caused by the unseasonable weather. The green super- > intendent (Mr M. J. Hodgins), his assistant (Mr C. Trevethick), and the greenkeeper (Mr C. Palmer), have been unremitting iu their endeavours during the Pupt two months to make the greens as perfect as was humanly possible. All of them deserve the thanks of the club for the time and energy they have put into their work. The club is now in a position to increase its membership, as m the near future the two greens will be available for play. JOHNSONVILLE CLUB. There was a large gathering of members and friends at the opening of the above club on Saturday afternoon. The president (Mr V. A. Mills) extended a hearty welcome to all present, and trusted they would all enjoy themselves, tie thanked the ladies for the manner m which they had dispensed the refreshments during the last season, and was pleased that they were again coming forward this year. The jack was then thrown up by Mrs Mills, and the green declared open for play. A match between the president and vice-president was played, and resulted in a win for the latter.
