REVIVAL IX MASTERTON. RESULTS OF SATURDAY’S CONTESTS. (By Tckgvaph—Own Correspondent). MASTERTON, October 14. There has been a very encouraging jevival of boxing in Masterton, after the sport had received a very severe set-back ns a result of the ■war. Many of the prominent Wlairarapa boxers and officials have made supreme saer:fice. The sport was on a sound footing prior to the war and Masterton produced the New Zealand champion in his class, namely George Barr, who was also runner-up ii: the Australasian championship meeting at Sydney some years ago. Many capital boxers were turned out in those days by Fred Maloney, a particularly capable instructor, who iiow resides in Wellington, while i'jfofessional contests were staged at fairly frequent intervals. Excellent arrangements were made for tho occasion by an energetic band of officials, ably headed by Mr V. G. Darroch as secretary. Air Tim Tracey, of Wellington, acted as judge giving his services free, and a large attendance of enthusiasts were well satisfied with tho contests and the judge’s derisions. Mr Tracey was well pleased with the exhibitions given, and especially so with the general arrangements. THE RESULTS. Stoddart (Carterton) Bst 71bs heat E. Miller (Masterton) Bst. Ktmb-ull (Carterton) lOst beat Allen (Masterton) lOst. Chamberlain (Masterton) lOst filbs heat Phillips (Carterton) lOst 6Lbs. Johansen (Masterton) ICtet 12lbs beat Crawley (Carterton) list Tibs. These contests were confined to three two-minute rounds. A GOOD CONTEST. A five-round fight between Gardner (Masterton) 9st orbs and Black (Wellington) 9st was the best contest seen in Masterton for some years. It was fast, clean and clever. In the first round Gardner had Black down for nine seconds, and on rising he was dazed, only his ring generalship keeping him in the fight. Gardner had best of the first round. Rounds two, three, four and five were very fast, scientific and even. The verdict an favour of Gardner was a popular one. A WILLING ENCOUNTER. The five-round contest between Ratner (Wellington) 9st and Pappe (Masterton) 8s lOlbs produced some good boxing Papps inflicted heavy punish ment in the infighting and the ‘‘rough ups,” but Ratner in the open, with clean work, outclassed Papps. The fight was a willing one, but Ratner was the more scientific 'boxer and gained tho verdict. The takings amounted to about £6O. The contests were held under the ausinces of the Wairarapa Boxing Association. and in aid of the funds of the Masterton competitions society. SMITH DEFEATS MENDIES. At the Stadium Tommy Smith defeated George Mendies, the fly-weight champion, on points, after a strenuous contest.
