MAYOR’S WARNING
HOUSEHOLDERS’ TRICKED. “CASH IN ADVANCE” TO STRAY CALLERS. “Information has reached me,” stated the Mayor (Mr R. A. Wright) to a “Times” reporter “that recently a man has been calling at various houses in the city offering for a reasonable enough sum to nttix street numberplates to the front door or gate, but, unfortunately, citizens have agreed to the suggestion that they slioukLpay in advance, and some of them arc still waiting for their number-plates. “I wish to issue a warning that any person acting in this way is not acting with the authority of the City Council, even though he may be in possession of information as to correct numbers, and so on. People would be wiser not to hand over their money for work of this kind until it is actually completed; paying in advance is not businesslike, and is anything but | satisfactory. “The same remarks apply to the person or persons visiting houses and kindly giving advice, again for a consideration of a few shillings, as to the best means of meeting the changei over in electrical power. That person I has no authority whatever from the I City Council, and householders would !be very well advised when they are (called on by such a person to ask him |to produce his authority. I am afraid .some citizens are a little gullible on I points such as these.”
