AUCKLAND CANDIDATE ME J. A. DUNNING. At a meeting of the Professorial Board of the Auckland University College. Mr J. A. Punning, B.Sc., was selected as the Auckland candidate for the New Zealand Rhodes Scholarship. Mr Running’s scholastic and athletic record is as follows : Scholastic.—l9o3-1914, attended Ti Point Primary School (one teacher school and from 1906-1911 a half-time school); 1918, passed Standard VI. proficiency examination; 19H, gained a junior scholarship; 1915-19. attended Auckland Grammar School; 1916, gained senior National Scholarship; 1918, first prise in , mathe. matics ana science in the A division of the fifth form.; 1919, second prise in mathematics and science in the sixth form, gained junior University Scholarship, nlaced Uth in New Zealand, gained Gillies Scholarship; 1929-1923, attended Auckland University College; 1990, pass, ed first section of the B.Sc., in pure end applied mathematics and chemistry; 1991, passed section of B.Sc. in physics; 1922, completed B.Sc. in advanced chemistry and advanced mathematics, and passed first section of the B.A. examination in Latin and French. Athletic.—l9l6-1918, played cricket for Junior Grammar teams, 1919, played for the Auckland Grammar School eleven, and was both opening batsman and howler, and took largest number of wickets during the season; representative of sixth forms on tennis and fives committees; 1920, played for the college second eleven, heading the howling averages. and being second in the halting; selected for the Auckland junior rep. team; 1921, played for the college senior eleven, heading the batting averages for the seasen; captained the college team against Victoria College; captained the College second grade hockey team; 1998, in Dunedin, gained a place in the Caris. brook Cricket Club's senior team.
