EXCITING ARREST
SERIOUS CHARGE FOLLOWS. SCENE IN PANAMA STREET. ALLEGED OFFENCE AT EASTBOURNE. An exciting incident, followed by the arrest of a man named Arthur Everett, aged about 30, described as a ship’s steward, took place in Panama street in tho city about 5.15 p.m. yesterday. A large number of people were pro eroding along Lamb-ton Quay when their attention was directed to the end of 'Panama- street, where one man had seized hold of another and a pretty hard tussle was proceeding on the pavement, the drapery window dose bv -being in imminent danger for- a while.
A big crowd very soon assembled, 1-Ut the struggle proceeded until P.C. McJennett arrived in plain clothes From the shouting that was going on he gathered that an arrest was desired and he got hold of one of the pair. Immediately the other took to his lieeh down Panama street.
It wa3 explained that a charge waa preferred against the man who was disappearing from sigjit, and the constable gave chase. A member of the public caught hold of the man and held him until the police officer arrived. The man was handcuffed and with the assistance of another officer taken to the police station, where a charge of indecently assaulting a boy at- Eastbourne some days ago was preferred. The case will come before the magistrate in due course.
