A WEST COAST IDEA

THE MINE BEAUTIFUL. Recently the Westport Coal Company commissioned Mr Tannock (superintendent of reserves at Dunedin) to visit their colliery towns at Denniston and Hillerton to ascertain what amenities were possible there in view of the climatio. and other natural conditions that have to be contended with. As a result of Mr Tannock ’s report, the company has now appointed Mr B. K. Goudie, who was formerly in charge of the Government reserves at Cornwallis Park as forester and superintendent of amenities, for the purpose of carrying out a scheme of tree-planting, both for beautifying the district and to provide timber for the necessities of the mine in veare to come. The intention is to beautify the place bv the planting of trees wherever possible, and shrubs and flowers, and, if possible, to provide facilities for swimming an some of the company’s dams, with playgrounds for the children and provision for such games as tennis, cricket, and football. In tlbe last two years the Westport Coal Company has erected a ecore of tasteful cottages and these are being added to. Mr Tannock, in hie report, speoities suitable spots for tree-planting about Dennieton, and estimates that about 1000 acres might be made available for this purpose near Millerton. A sito near the dam at Millerton is recommended for a nursery.
