EASTBOURNE AFFAIRS

BOROUGR COUNCIL MEETS. ANNUAL RATES APPROVED. The Eastbourne Borough Council met last night, with the Mayor (Mr F. H. Mather) presiding. Others present were: Councillors C. A. Marquis, H. M. Jones, C. Hartridge, C. Bowman, and H. W. Shortt. A special meeting was held before the ordinary meeting to confirm the customary statutory rate resolutions. The general rate of 4Jd in the £1 on the unimproved value on all ratable property in the boroug hwas confirmed. The hospital and charitable aid rate Was Id in the £l. A special rate of three-eighths of a penny in the £1 via struck. The annual sanitation fee of 219 6d was also confirmed. All rates will be payable on August 17th, 1923. The customary motion was moved by the Mayor, and seconded by Councillor Shortt, and unanimously carried. With reference to a petition from residents at Nikau street making general complaints as to its condition, the council referred the matter to the general manager for favourable consideration, as it considered that the request was justified. The council gave its consent, subject to certain conditions, to the Eastbourne memorial committee for the use of a space for a memorial on the north side of the wharf. Suggested regulations for the municipal tennis courts were considered and approved.
