MAGISTRATE’S COURT
SATURDAY'S SITTING POLICE PROSECUTIONS. Mr E. Page, S.M., presided over Saturday morning’s sitting of the Magistrate's Court. William Murphy, with three previous convictions for drunkenness, was fined £l, in default three days' imprisonment. Frank Burney, alias McLeod, had three charges of false pretences pre* ferred agaisst him. Chief-Detective Kemp said the accused had come to Wellington and engaged a taxi-driver to drive him to the race#. On arrival at Trentham accused told the driver to wait while he went and got the money. He returned and told the man he could not get the money. He managed to persuade the driver that lie would get the money the next day. The accused’s next appearance was at Tynnside Station, in Masterton, where he obtained a< sum of £6 from the stationmaster's son by false pretences. Mr* A. B. Sievwrifeht, counsel for accused, said the offences were committed while the man was on a drinking bout. He asked that a fine be imposed. The magistrate said he would have to sentence accused to a term of imprisonments—one month with hard labour.
