MOTES AND COMMENTS. (By "Carbine.") Not a great deal of interest was taken in the midsummer meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club, which was held on Saturday, and the trouble, of course, is that it is only a one-day fixture. The weather was good and- the track was in almost perfect order. Eacing was opened with the Hornby Handicap, which was run under hack conditions over a ten furlong course. Curiously, Petunia was sent out favourite despite the facts that the distanco and his weight were against him. He was up with the leaders until the reat racing began, and then he dropped out of the running. Eoniform became prominent when the field had covered six furlongs and just before the straight was entered ho draw away and went on to win very easily by two lengths from First Aid, with Marauder third.

Gay Life, with Emerson aboard, was sent out favourite for the Trial Stakes, but she failed completely. Valdamo, Sharpburst and Carette were the next in demand). The early running was made by Bonny Friend, Heraldry and Proliliman, while Barmaid was lying handy. With half the journey covered Barmaid ran up to ihe leaders, andl, improving her position, she turned into the straight with a .good break on Heraldry, Bonny Friend, and Valdamo. Valdamo, finishing well, had the race in hand' at the distance, and eventually won by three lengths from Barmaid, who was five lengths ahead of Heraldry. Carette and Sharpburst were the next to finish. The Lyttelton Plate proved to be a good! thing for Murihaupo. Wild Hind, Murihaupo and Kilris raced on fairly oven, terms for a furlong or so, and then Kilris lost her position. Murihaupo led Wild Hind: on to the course proper and from the bottom of the straight ran home an easy winner by a good length. Another half-dozen lengths back came Lucdnette. Owlscomhe was fourth. The whole of the six acceptors went to the post for the Midsummer Handicap, the principle race of the day, and the winner turned up in Palestrina, after an interesting race in which her nearest attendants at the finish were Scrimmage and Eoyal Star. The winner went well all the way and evidently is coming right again.

A surprise was in store in the Craven Plate, ior which Limelight had all along been in the boom. Limelight failed to pull her army of supporters through, and the decision went to Battle Scene, with Pluto second and the favourite third. There will be racing at Hawera and at Wingatui on Wednesday. Automoana will catch a race over fences soon. She was started In the hurdles on the second day at Woodville, and though she did not jump well at the commencement, she improved as the race progressed and was clearing the obstacles well at the finish. The Hawk galloped well at Woodville on Thursday morning, cutting out fire furlongs in tmin^3sec. Killashandra curprised the' trackwatchers by bettering this time and doing it well. Several who were at W’oodville are of the opinion that Deronlede was unlucky to lose the stake in the open six on the tecond day. Kail was pulled about a good deal in the hurdles on the first day at WoodviPe and on the second day, when better handled, he won nioely. Nursing Sister was a bit unlucky not to win a race at Woodville, for had she been allowed to run along when she hit the front it is doubtful if she would have been caught. Askari was not readv at Woodville, but the racing there will have done him pood, and he will not be long in showing his best.

Mireusonta has gone wrong and is again on the easy list. Aratura, who won a race on the second day of the Woodville meeting, is by All Black from Mrs Wiggs. and, therefore. is a full brother to Kail. He is a good sort of hack and when he scored was the machine favourites
