BOXING

NELSON TOURNAMENT. SOME INTERESTING CONTESTS. The first open air boxing tournament in Nelson was held *i.t Trafalgar Park oil January 30tli, and was most successful, there being a large attendance of the public. Results: Spiers (Nelson) beat Tooms (Blenheim) on points in a six round bout. Rodda (Blenheim) beat Simons (Nelson) in the fifth round of a six round bout. Rix-Trott (Nelson) beat Burton (Blenheim) in ti le third round of a four round bout. Brice (Nelson) lost to Mclllwraith (Nelson) on points - in a four round bout. The big attraction of the tournament was between Holgate, Bst 61b, Nelson, and Tim Tracy’s crack pupil, Percy Black (Wellington). This was 'to hove been a six twominute round bout. When the gong sounded Black rushed out of his chair and 4|et sail after Hoi gate, wha thought that a cyclone bad struck him. One who witnessed the match says that such was the fury of Black’s attack that I-lolgate was knocked down for 7 seconds in the first round and for 9 in the second round. Then the referee (Mr Taylor), seeing that H/olgate was completely outclassed, stopped the bout and gave his decision in Favour of Black, who had his opponent very sick. Tim Tracy deserves special credit for sending down a boy of Black’s calibre, as be is easily the best seen in Nelson for an amateur. Barnes (Wellington) disappointed the Nelson Boxing Association by not competing at their carnival. Olarrie Blackburn, who took Wally Burke’s place, outpointed Dave Ross, of Melbourne, in a twenty round bout at the Brisbane Stadium, and toynight boxes Eugene Volaire at Brisbane.
