SANDERS CUP CONTEST

MURIHIKU WINS SECOND RACE EYNIN FINISHES FOURTH. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 31. The second race for the Sanderu Cup was sailed to-day in a light breeze from the east. The course was a triangular one of eight 'knots. The Bona was sailed by D. Lygard, and the others, as yesterday. There was about an hour's ebb tide to go when the boatß got away, the Eynin being the first with the others all together. The Murihiku got away clear, and had a slight lead. Short boards wore made down the harbour, all the boats keeping fairly close together. At the Victoria wharf the Linnet was leading with the Rona as her nearest attendant, then came the Eynin, Murihiku and Winifred last. The wiijd was now south-east, and the Linnet held too long in the starboard tack towards the north head, and lost the best of it. The Murihiku., Rona and Eynin had worked more down mid-harbour, and got the first of the south-east wind, but it was very light, and all were nearly becalmed. The Linnet stood out on the port side but the Murihiku and Rona weathered her. ROUNDING THE SANDSPIT.

The times of rounding the sandspit were:—Rona llhr 47min 2sec; Murihiku, llhr 47min 28sec; Eynin, llhr 48min 22sec; Linnet, llhr 48min 38 seo; Winifred, llhr 51min SOsec. The Rona still ' held the lead with the MtfjrtbFvU about six TenlgthH astern. The Linnet now was sailing faster and passed the Eynin and set off after the Murihiku, but failed 10 catch heir. The 1 times rounding the Orakei mark were:—Plena, 12hr 2min Linnet, 12hr 3min 35seo; Eynin, 12hr 3min 43sec; Winifred, 12hr smin 55 seo. THE FIRST ROUND TIMES. ■ The Rona now set her spinnaker well forward and drew away from the Southland boat, and it was a good go between, the Rona and Murihiku tor leading position. Th© times of completing the first round were: Rona, 12hrs 25min 15sec; Murihiku, 12hr 25min 35sec; Liisnet, 12hr 27min 23sec; Eynin, 12hr 29min 20sec; Winifred, 12hr 29min 62sec. The Rona and Murihiku then made several short boards, trying for the weather position, but the Rona came round in the Murihiku’s'weather each time. The Rona kept well under the Devonport shore. This move, however, was not a wise one, and really cost her the race. The Murihiku held a course more to leeward, and picked up on the Rona. passing her off the Iris moorage.' The Linnet followed the Murihiku’s' course, and also passed the Rona. The times of rounding the sandspit for the second time were:’—Murihiku, 12hr 53min 28 sec; Linnet, I2]jr 44min 24sec; Rona, 12hr 54min 31seo: Eynin, 12hr 65min 45sec; Winifred, 12hr 57min 15sec.
