VALUELESS CHEQUES

AN IMPUDENT FRAUD. VETERINARY SURGEON’S FALL. Patriok MoKibbon, alias Daw, alias McLeod, alias Olayton, alias Whitman, appeared before Mr W. G. Riddell,. S.'M.,, at yesterday’s sitting of the' Magistrate’s Court. He was charged with obtaining a Ford car valued at £75 and a tin of benzene valued at 13s 6d from Albert Ernest Edward Orland Wellington Brooks,' by means of a valueless cheque. He was further charged with obtaining the sum of £5 in money from John Keel, also by means of a valueless cheque.

The complainant said that he was a builder and resided at Main road, Lower Hutt. On December 24th, the accused came to him and asked if he had a oar which would do to run about in. He (witness) told him that he had a two-seater Eoird car which he would like to dispose of. Accused said an accident had occurred to his seven-seater touring car on the Paejoakariki hill. An arrangement was entered into whereby the accused was to purchase the car for £75. A trial run was given, and after that the witness and accused drove in the car to Wellington. They pulled up at a motor garage in Molesworth street and purchased a tin of benzine. Accused then told witness that his father had his cheque book and asked if he would mind giving him a leaf out of his cheque book. This witness did, and a cheque for, £75 13s 6d was made out by accused and tendered to witness in payment for the car and the tin of benzine. As he said he was short of ready money accused asked for a second leaf from witness’s cheque book, This cheque was made out for £5 and was cashed by the proprietor of the garage in Molesworth street. John Keel, the proprietor of the garage, gave evidence as to the drawing up of both the cheques in question.

In a signed statement the accused said 'he was a veterinary surgeon, registered in London, but not in New Zealand. He admitted the offences with which he was charged. The accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
