BIRTHS AND DEATHS
INTERESTING STATISTICS. SOME WELLINGTON FIGURES. The births in Wellington for the month of December numbered 173, equal to 1.56 per 1000 of the population. The deaths numbered ;0, or 0.63 per 1000. In 1921 the corresponding birth rate was 1.76 and the death rate 0.81. The deaths of 170 persons of 65 years and upwards were registered for fifteen urgan areas during the month. Of these 14 were between 65 and 70; 31 between 70 and 80; 33 between 80 and 90; and two over 90, the oldest being 96. The latter was at Christchurch. There were six deaths in Wellington between the ages of SO and 90, and 11 between 70 and 80 years. Th© total births registered for the fifteen urban areas amounted to 1005, as against 1102 in November—a decrease of 97. The deaths in December were 423, a decrease of 24 as compared with the previous month. Of the total death males contributed 222. females 201. Fifty-one of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 12.06 per cent of the whole number. Thirty-nine of these were under one years of ago. There were 12 cases of suicide during month, and 11 dealths as the result of accidents, these being the returns for the whole of the areas.
