Poverty Bay 6 goals Wellington , 0 goals VICTORY FOI^POSSIBLES 4 GOALS TO 3 BRILLIANT PLAY BY PICKED TEAMS. As was anticipated, the game between the “Possibles” and the “Probables” at the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon was a warmly-contested one, the object being to put all players on their mettle for the chance of selection for the team to play against tho Australians on Saturday next. THE' TEAMS. Following were the players:— Possibles (Yellow and Red). —Goal, Moore (Karori); full-backs, Martin (Petone) and Harris (Huia); halves, Scott (Petone), Whitehead (’Varsity), and Thorpe (Butt); forwards, Kirk (’Varsity), A. Cousins (United), Heaphy (Rambler), R. Lusty (United), and Watchman (Karori). Probables (Blue).—Goal, Harvey (Karori); full-backs, G. Lusty (Hutt), and Cartwright (Huia); halves, L. Webley (Petone), Clout (Hutt), and Adams (Huia); forwards, Fredericks (Ramblers), Aitchieon (Petone), Philpotte (Petone), R, Dusty (Hutt), and Smith (Hutt). The referee was Mr Ash, Edwards. THE PLAY.

Shortly after the < commencement of play, Martin conceded a comer, which was cleared by Heaphy, and Adams intercepted. The yellows then attacked srongly, but Watchman spoiled a rather good opening by being just a bit toe anxious, hitting over the line, Heaphy broke away in fine style from the 25 yards line, but Cousins was penalised.. Fredericks then made an excellent run, 'but Martin cleared, being, however, pen-' sliced for under-cutting. Hughes then broke, away, and Cartwright cleared twice in rapid suceejseion, being evidently in Although the blues’ goalie made an excellent save, he was unable to stop the fast shot put in by Heaphy. almost immediately afterwards. Possibles l goal, Probables o.' Harvey, almost immediately, was called upon again to save, and needed all his wits about him, .the shot being a most diffioult one. The yellows were then awarded two corners, tout failed to make good from them. At the end of the first interval the score remained unchanged. Heaphy was unlucky, and fnieeed an almost certain goal, being given ‘'off-side” soon afterwards. The. play was of a very even description, the teams being well matched, with little to choose between them. Shortly before the .second interval Cousins sooted with a beautiful shot following some excellent nlay by the yellow men. Tbio made the figuresPossibles 2 goals, Probables 0, 1 When tho third stage of the game was commenced, it was policed that : several strategic changes had been made in. the teams, Heaphy, Watchman, and Cousins, going over to. the opposite side (blues), while the positions of others were altered. The effect of these modifications was at once apparent, the: Probables now showing their strength by scoring .their fireft goal through a brilliant bit' of play by Lusty. - Possibles 2 goals. Probahleß 1 Play no* was more even than ever, but mention must be made of three or, four very brilliant saves by Moore, but for whose ability the result ;of the game might not have stood in hiß team’s favour. ! It was not long, however, before Lusty again scored 1 ■ for the bluee his shot being quite unstoppable. Pos , sibles 2' goals, Probables 2 goals. _ The rest of the game mayy foe judged by the successive figures, which read as follow:—Possibles 3 goals, Probables 2 goals; Possibles 4 goals, Probables’,2 goals; Possibles 4 goals, PrOhahles 8 goals; tho last goal being by Aitohison just before the closing whistle, THE PLAYERS. Comparisons ’are notoriously invidious; and, when all the players were (as here) picked veterans, it wa« exceedingly diffioult to name the most outstanding contestants'. There is no doubt, ; however, that, of the yellows, Harris, Whitehead, Heaphy, and Cousins were the best of the.active skirmishers, Moore, being a whole host in himself at the bests. 4 For the blues, Lusty, Fredericks, Adams, and Cartwright did grand.,work, the last-named .being specially worthy of mention for .his cool, unerring, judgment. He has the makings of a fine player ,for a representative team. : Webley wag the pick of the halves. The weakness of the blues lay in their forwards,.,who lacked combination, and did not folow up as they should have done. There is little room for doubt that the Australians will have to “go some” next Saturday if they expect to defeat the team to be eent against them. REPRESENTATIVE TEAM.

The following team has, been chosen to represent Wellington . in the , match against the Australians:— , Goal, Moore;,fullbacks, Sherwood and Harris; halves, Scott, Whitehead.' Martin (Petone); forwards, Kirk, A. Cousins, Heaphy (captain.), R. Lusty, Watchman; emergency half, Thorpe; forward, Smith. THE CURTAIN-RAISER PETONE TOO GOOD FOR KIA ORA. The curtain-raiser to the Possible v. Probable match was a’ match between the two leading • teams in the ladies’ junior grade; Petone' and Kia Ora. The first spell was in Petone’s favour.; The defensive . work of the Kia Ora hacks . (Misses Symons and McGrath) was good and was.an important factor in keeping the Petone forwards out. The second spell told the tale. Petone forwards gave a bright display of long passing, the ball travelling 'practically from wing to wing. A fine piece ,of wing work by Miss MoGaskiiU gave Mise Aitclheson an opening, and tho ball was in the not. Potone’s second goal was obtained by the fast winger, Miss MoCaskill, who sent in a shot that gave the goalkeeper no possible chance to dear; The last ten minutes saw Kia Ora pressing, but their efforts were fruitless, !the best team, Petone, winning by two goals-to nil. Mr Edwards was the referee.
